Head to the mountain towns, and particularly the areas near North Carolina's ski resorts , like Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, pictured above. Historic Yates Mill County Park. Just outside Raleigh, Yates Mill is an 18th-century gristmill. This is a good place to come for a little history and photography.

If you are looking for some urban images, head to Raleigh and photograph the city lights, the modern skyline, or the State Capitol building. Not far from the town of Hendersonville , DuPont State Recreational Forest is home to a number of hiking trails and several lovely waterfalls. This area was used as a filming location in the first Hunger Games movie. For a little nostalgia, head to Mount Airy. Continue your tour of the River Arts District with fancy fuel like nitro-brewed coffee and tempeh bacon at this trendy cafe. The sleek black-and-white theme is highly Instagrammable , too.

Take a hike on one of Craggy Gardens's spectacular trails, which are flecked with wildflowers and pickable blueberries if you visit in the right season.

The mountain views are tough to beat. Vegetarian cuisine shines at this funky cafe with a pleasant outdoor patio. Loaded sandwiches like the veggie reuben are worth a closeup. You can take classes ranging from a one-night pottery workshop to "intermediate wheel throwing" at this busy educational center.

Don't forget to photograph your finished masterpiece. Novelist Thomas Wolfe is one of Asheville's most famous former residents. The boardinghouse where he grew up inspired much of his work, and it's open for public tours. Enter Downtown's historic Flatiron building , then let an antique elevator whisk you upstairs to four terraces with panoramic views of both the city and mountains.

From the bridge that spans the creek directly in front of the falls, you can shoot the spectacle in any number of ways, from a close-up snap of water droplets, sharp and suspended, to a wide angle, slow shutter-speed capture of swirls and soft curtains. You can access the base by a 3 mile out-and-back trail, or climb to the ridge just above the falls via a slightly more strenuous 3.

In the summertime, Roan Mountain becomes so spectacular with blooming Catawba Rhododendrons that an annual festival is held on its grassy summit each June, celebrating the rare beauty of these natural gardens.
